Here are a few items we’d suggest taking a look at. 1. Replace your air filter 2. Check and repair your driveway and landscaping as needed 3. Check and repair all your exterior caulking and weather stripping 4. Cut back any trees that are nearing your siding or roof 5. Check for any pests around the exterior of your home and treat as needed 6. Check the grout on your tile in showers and bathtubs and repair as needed 7. Check your gutters and downspouts and clean if needed 8. Maintain grading to slope away from your foundation walls 9. Check your sump pump, and inspect basement for dampness or leakage 10. “going green” for personal, political, or environmental reasons, nothing is more on trend than eco-friendly building materials.  And for good reason!  Relying on natural materials – or those considered rapidly renewable, sustainably harvested or made organically – can have multiple benefits.  For example, from an environmental perspective, using eco-friendly building materials can help to conserve nonrenewable resources, divert and reuse materials previously destined for landfills, and minimize environmental impacts.  The benefits for your family are great as well – the use of green products can help to ensure that fewer toxic chemicals and indoor air pollutants enter your home.  Here are some tips for easily implementing eco-friendly building practices in your home: **Install Energy Efficient Windows:** Windows can be one of the biggest sources of heating and cooling energy loss in homes.  Consider replacing your windows with energy efficient units.  Not only will you be likely to reduce your energy bill with your new found efficiency, energy efficient windows are great for the environment.  Check [this pollution by using low or zero-VOC (volatile organic compounds) finishes.  Durable and affordable, these paints can offer similar results, with less harm to human health and environment.  Sustainable paints, stains, and finishes rely on water instead of petroleum-based solvents as their base.  While the amount of VOCs can vary from one product to another, look for a paint with fewer than 25 grams of VOCs per liter. **Rethink Your Flooring:** Start your environmentally friendly efforts from the ground up!  Popular sustainable flooring options include bamboo or cork – both of which are considered renewable resources.  Other options include all natural linoleum (made from linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins, ground limestone and pigments) or tile made from re-purposed, crushed glass. **Engineered Lumber:** Consider using engineered lumber for your next home improvement project.  Unlike natural woods, which have knots and inconsistencies that result in wasted lumber, engineered wood products make use of 60 – 70 percent of their raw material.  In addition, the production of engineered wood does not rely on endangered old-growth timber and can instead by made using doors](https://homecareincremodeling.com/s/news/img).  This week we’re bringing our door discovery outside and looking instead at exterior entrances. **MATERIALSSteel:** The main choice to consider when picking an exterior door is the door material.  There are three main choices available including steel, fiberglass, and wood.  The most affordable option of the three is steel.  However, while steel doors offer a slight advantage over fiberglass and wood in terms of barrier strength, their life expectancy is also shorter – five to seven years on average.  Still, the return on project investment is high with a steel door – Remodeling Magazine’s [Cost vs. Value Report](http://www.remodeling.hw.net/2011/costvsvalue/national.aspx) estimates the total project cost of installing a 20-gauge steel door at about $1,200—and the project, on average, returns about 73% of cost.**Fiberglass:** Fiberglass doors offer the highest degree of stylistic options, including variations that very accurately mimic the look of wood.  Fiberglass doors are all but maintenance free and are known to last nearly twice as long as their steel or wood counterparts.  Their price typically falls somewhere between the steel and wood options.**Wood:** Wood doors are typically the preferred choice for high-end projects or those looking for a luxury entryway aesthetic.  However, wood is also the most expensive and most maintenance-intensive option. **DIRECTIONInswing Versus Outswing:** Like with interior doors, when choosing exterior doors the direction of the door’s swing must be considered.  A door with an inswing opens toward the inside of the house.  Alternately, a door with an outswing opens toward the outside of the house.  Inswing doors are more prevalent and most homes are naturally designed to accommodate them.**Right Hand Versus Left Hand:** In addition to the directional swing, the placement of door hinges must all be well thought-out.  Hinges must be placed on the left side for an outswing door and on the right side for an inswing door. **STYLE**Your front door is the first impression that most guests will get when visiting your home.  As such your exterior door should be a reflection of your interior style.  To help convey that style, consider color, size, and shape.  In addition, don’t hesitate to incorporate unique decorative elements such as colored home’s doors is a cost-effective way to improve your home’s interior and give a room extra panache!  Before settling on a new door, it is important to consider several features including: style, materials, door swing, and more. **Style**Your first key decision will be your door’s style.  Interior doors come in a variety of styles including paneled (or embossed to appear paneled) doors, louvered doors, French doors, and many more.  The style you choose should complement the rest of the room in both size and design.  For example, a large and ornate door might overwhelm a small room, making it feel cramped.  While you want the elements of your home (including your doors) to have a sense of continuity, feel free to mix and match when it comes to door styles.  While ornate French doors might be perfect for dividing your sunroom and living room, perhaps simpler faux-paneled doors work better throughout the rest of your house. **Door Swing**When ordering a single acting door (doors that are hinged on one side and open in one direction), you can typically order either a right-hand or left-hand door swing.  Whichever side the handle is on as the door opens toward you will decide whether it’s a right-hand or a left-hand door.  Consider your door’s placement when ordering and strive to avoid doors opening into halls or corridors upon placement. **Door Framing**Door framing can be just as important as the door itself.  Doors can be bought pre-hung (mounted in a frame with its hinges attached to the doorjamb) or as slabs.  A slab door comes just as the door itself — you’ll need to install hinges and the door frame before hanging.  Consider your level of ability when deciding whether to purchase a pre-hung or slab door or seek professional help to install your
