Designing a welcoming basement is more than a one-size-fits-all formula; it’s about creating a space that works for your life. Whether you enjoy hosting movie marathons, holiday gatherings, game-day celebrations, or Oscar viewing parties, we’ll design a lower-level custom-tailored to your interests and style. Need a little inspiration before you start planning your project? Whether you’re finishing an empty basement or remodeling an existing space, read our favorite tips for designing a cozy basement! **Design Around Hosting** We all have different hosting styles, but what’s one thing every party needs? Refreshments! Wet bars and kitchenettes are one of our favorite basement additions for entertaining. Keeping food, drinks, serveware, and cleaning supplies on hand is much easier than running between levels nonstop! **Brighten Things with Lighting** Trying to create a warm atmosphere? Don’t skimp on lighting! Install plenty of overhead fixtures (like recessed lights) so your basement is bright any time of the year. Up the charm with wall sconces, or add dimmers to get cozy for movie nights! **Bring in Cozy Touches** Don’t overlook the details – the little things make a space shine! Install a fireplace, wall paneling, custom built-ins, or fun wallpaper to up the charm. Look for furnishings that make you feel relaxed and at ease, and don’t forget to add plenty of extra blankets and pillows so everyone can get comfortable! **Think Kid-Friendly** Even if you don’t have children, there’s a strong chance you’ll host people with them. Consider basic safety, like locking off-limits areas and securing alcohol or glassware from curious little hands. Create a play space for toys, a reading nook, or an area for burning off energy with playmats or climbers (these can often be found cheap on Facebook marketplace). If you really want to go over the top, install a swing or hanging chair – kids will have a blast! **Include a Guest Suite** If you frequently host overnight guests, consider including a guest suite. Think of it as your own little basement B&B! Your guests will love having a separate space to unwind at the end of the day and a bathroom of their own for extra privacy.
