When NOT to DIY: Projects Worth Calling in the Professionals

We live in an age of endless information, at a given moment any topic can be thoroughly researched on the internet. With all of this available knowledge, it can be tempting for homeowners to tackle projects that might be out of their depth. Certainly, there are plenty of updates and upgrades that are DIY friendly, but some can be difficult or even downright dangerous when attempted by a non-expert.

The desire to save money is a legitimate one, but some projects are only best left to the professionals. Below are four home upgrades we’d advise approaching with prudence, and better yet leaving to the experts – like us! If you need help taking care of any of the following projects, please give us a call.

Additions and Major Changes. It’s always smart to seek professional advice when starting projects that will involve major structural change. Navigating city codes and building permits can be a tricky affair, one where mistakes can be costly holdups to progress.

Electrical Work. Few updates involve more potential for danger than electrical work. Wires, sockets, and power lines are serious business – messing with them as a novice can lead to life-threatening injuries. Saving a little money on an electrician is simply not worth the risk, play it safe and call a professional when dealing with any wiring projects.

Plumbing Problems. Nothing can wreak havoc on a home more quickly than a plumbing problem – burst pipes, flooding, and water damage are no joke! Save yourself the mess and start by calling an experienced contractor or plumber when making changes that alter your home’s plumbing.

Roofing and Siding. A home’s exterior is essential; roofing and siding are what protect your home from the elements. Poorly installed siding or a leaky roof are more than a small inconvenience; they lower your home’s energy efficiency and waste money. Beyond that, leaks can also lead to lasting home damages and an endless cycle of repairs.
